ROMULUS, Mich. (WJBK) -- Travelers are crossing Michigan to their holiday travel destinations.
AAA Michigan estimates that more than 1.3 million state residents will travel 50 miles or more during this year's Thanksgiving period, an increase of 7 percent over 2011. They're joining nearly 44 million Americans who are traveling Wednesday through Sunday.
Christopher Hopper of Macomb is one of those taking to the air, rails or roads. In his case, it's the air. The 21-year-old Harvard University student flew home from Boston to celebrate Thanksgiving with his family.
Hopper says his travel experience was "not as bad" as he thought it might be.
Transportation Security Administration officials expect security to move at a quicker pace than in the past due to a few changes. FOX 2's Al Allen says children under 12 and seniors over 75 years old no longer are required to remove their shoes at the security gate.
The TSA's Robert Ball says frequent flyers also have the opportunity for quicker screenings. "They're still being screened but they do have a quicker process that allows us to spend more time and attention on those who've earned that."
One college student who says she flies home every year for Thanksgiving said Metro Airport seemed "usually busier."
