More chilly nights are in store for dozens of residents at a Delaware County apartment complex- still without heat, more than a month into the chilly-weather season.
"Yeah, I can't take it anymore, man," said David Selden as he peered out from his apartment at "The Gardens," on the 7200 block of Radbourne Rd. in Upper Darby.
Selden says his space heater is broken, but we noticed it was plenty toasty in his apartment.
Why?
"'Cause I have my oven on. My oven's been on."
FOX 29s Bruce Gordon reminded Selden of the dangers of leaving an oven on for long periods.
"I know that," said Selden.
Just across the street- in another Gardens apartment, Maruice Brown described his nighttime ritual: two hours of running his oven with the door open, "and then I get under my covers and everything- the blankets- and I've got four or five quilts on my bed to keep me warm."
Gordon wanted to ask the office manager about the lack of heat, but she bolted from the office and sped off in her car as he approached.
Later, the man in charge of the complex- he would identify himself only as "Matthew"- called to confirm more than 60 resident are without heat, and to repeat what a note to residents said back on November 6th: a huge boiler broke just as the heating season began in mid-October- and Hurricane Sandy delayed the arrival of a replacement.
In the meantime, the complex is offering residents free space heaters to keep them warm until the heating system is fixed.
That could be awhile.
"Matthew" says a new boiler is expected to be delivered around December 7, and won't be fully up and running till December 17.
That's too late for David Selden.
"I'm done. I'm moving. This week- like in the next 72 hours!"
