City Council passes bill setting pedicab rates

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (AP) -

The New York City Council has approved new regulations for pedicabs intended to prevent tourists from being taken for a ride.

The Council voted unanimously on Tuesday to require that drivers of the three-wheeled cycles that can carry three passengers charge by the minute. The timer must be clearly visible.

Most pedicab drivers now charge by the city block and per passenger. Fares can add up to much more than some riders expect to pay.

In one notorious case during the summer, a family from Texas paid more than $400 for a 14-block ride.

City Councilman Daniel Garodnick said the new rules will tame "midtown's wild west." He said deception "cannot be a legitimate business practice in New York City."

Mayor Michael Bloomberg has said he will sign the legislation.
