Volunteer fire departments need donations

Maria Fabbrero and her 77 year old mother, Faye, were trapped by Hurricane Sandy's surge until members of the West Hamilton Beach Volunteer Fire Department rescued them by boat.

During a happy reunion with members who helped save their lives at the Queens firehouse located near Howard Beach, it was all hugs and smiles. But like all of the city's volunteer firehouses there is much work left to do.

The engines, trucks, and most of the equipment here was lost when the building flooded.

To get back on their feet volunteer fire departments are relying heavily on donations, including new fire engines.

One truck given by the Hooversville Fire Department was actually one of the first to respond during Flight 93 on 9/11. And another one came from from the Gulf Coast from a fire department heavily impacted by Hurricane Katrina.

Treasurer Mitch Udowitch says more donations are needed.
