Finneran granted immunity in probation probe

Posted: Updated:

BOSTON (FOX 25 / MyFoxBoston.com) – Former House speaker Thomas Finneran will be granted immunity to testify in the state Probation Department grand jury investigation.

According to The Boston Globe, Finneran will be able to speak out against John J. O'Brien, the indicted former probation commissioner.

O'Brien is accused of using his position to hire friends and family to prominent positions. He and two aides were indicted in March and face charges following a phony hiring process under which of job candidates were interviewed, but had no chance of getting the job because O'Brien had already selected people ahead of time.

Finneran gave O'Brien complete control of the agency following a 2001 budget amendment.

In 2010, the Globe revealed more than 250 people working at the Probation Department were specifically selected by O'Brien.
