Investigators: Teen tried to grab train, fell on tracks in Worcester

WORCESTER (FOX 25 / MyFoxBoston.com) A 14-year-old girl was hit by a freight train in Worcester Tuesday afternoon.

Emergency officials said the girl was walking with a group of teens as the train passed. At some point the girl tried to grab a handle on the train when she slipped and fell onto the tracks, investigators said.

A witness told the Telegram and Gazette that the girl was pulled offer he feet and one of her legs fell below the car. The witness said her leg was severed.

The teen was rushed to the hospital. Her condition was not immediately known.

The accident happened near the Greendale Mall on tracks separated from a parking lot by a fence. The paper reports there's a hole in the fence near where the girl was struck, and the area is used as a shortcut.

An investigation is ongoing.
