Temporary boiler installed at Finch Elementary

Posted: Updated:

Finch Elementary School students will once again be bussed to classes at nearby Kennedy Middle School on Thursday.  Their school remains closed after Monday's carbon monoxide leak, but a temporary mobile boiler was delivered to the school on Wednesday morning.

School officials say that boiler has been hooked up, but it must still be inspected by a state inspector before classes are allowed to resume at Finch Elementary's campus.  Therefore, it's still unclear when Finch Elementary will be back open for business.

Monday's evacuation was a result of a carbon monoxide leak that sickened nearly 50 students and adults.  All of them recovered, but school officials shut down the campus while they tried to determine what happened.  The leak is believed to have originated in the school's main boiler.

Parents of Finch students said they were frustrated by the situation.

"It's just too far. It's too far for them to have to ride the school bus when most of the kids do live in this area," said Angela Davis.

At least five people taken to the hospital on Monday have contacted attorneys, FOX 5 has learned. The attorney says a class action lawsuit is not out of the question.

Laquitha Stegall is one of those who have contacted a lawyer. She said that her 7-year-old daughter was taken to Hughes Spalding Hospital on Monday. Stegall said that she was told her daughter passed out.

"She had breathing treatments. She was hooked up to heart monitors and stuff like that," said Stegall.

Stegall said that not only has her daughter had to deal what happened Monday, but she's also had to adjust to a new school environment.

"It's actually too far and then my daughter this morning she wasn't feeling it. I had to literally calm her down because she was crying because it was new school," Stegall said.

School officials also said Wednesday that they will be installing carbon monoxide detectors in the school before it reopens.   APS officials are still in discussions to do the same at all Atlanta schools.
