MBTA to install more cameras following robberies of Red Line passengers
BOSTON (FOX 25 / MyFoxBoston.com) – An MBTA official tells FOX 25 the Red Line will be installing 400 new security cameras across six stations due in-part to a string of recent robberies.
The announcement comes the same day that investigators announced that a robber targeted women walking home from Red Line stations.
The incidents, which happened between the hours of 7 p.m. and 10:30 p.m., have all targeted females going home from JFK-UMass, Savin Hill, Shawmut and Ashmont stations. Police say the most recent one took place Tuesday night on Beaumont Street, near Ashmont station.
In each incident, police say the robber tries to engage the victims in a brief conversation before demanding money.
The suspect is described as a black male with a thin build, between the ages of age 20 and 30. He was wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt and even flashed a handgun in a few of the incidents.
Anyone with information is urged to call Crimestoppers at 1-800-494-TIPS.
