The Talker: McCarthy addresses recent dog shootings

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -
In the past few days, Chicago police have shot and killed two dogs.
Late Tuesday night, officers were called to the South Shore neighborhood to help out a pizza delivery driver who had just been robbed.
Cops found the suspects with the pizza box still in their hands. One of the suspects ran to a house and sent their pit bull to attack on them. Cops shot the dog twice. It survived.
This other case is now the focus of a lawsuit. On Saturday afternoon in the Uptown neighborhood, an officer who was writing a parking ticket was approached by a dog.
The owners say the bull terrier -- named Colonel -- was not threatening. The officer shot the dog twice. It also survived. The independent police review authority is investigating.
Colonel's owners say he's a puppy and he wouldn't hurt a fly. They say that the cop could have used pepper spray or just kicked him.
"He's a baby, he might lick you to death, but he's not an aggressive dog, he's around children all the time," Morgan Phillips said.
Police see it differently. Chicago police superintendent Garry McCarthy told FOX 32 News that officers can't stand around and wait to see if a dog attacks.
"Unfortunately officers get bit by dogs frequently," McCarthy said. "We don't have to wait to get bit by a dog we don't have to wait to get shot at before we take steps to protect ourselves. We have to shoot dogs frequently in the city. There's a story about last night where we made a robbery arrest and somebody released a pit bull and attacked the officer and had to be shot."
