Detroit Mayor Dave Bing says his administration are doing everything they can to avoid having the city file for bankruptcy or have an emergency manager take over.
"We got to get more resources as current cuts have gone way too deep," says Bing.
The number of city employees is now below 10-thousand, with another 400 to 500 hundred layoffs coming in the next couple of months, police and fire could be impacted, but they're trying not to take any officers off the streets.
Bing spoke to reporters at the press conference on Friday, just a few days after state Treasurer
Andy Dillon told city officials that next week he will begin a 30-day
review process that could lead to appointment of an emergency financial
manager.
Bing: "Let's not BS anybody, when you make these additional cuts, it's gonna have a negative impact on services."
Services for the 700-thousand Detroiters Mayor Bing says he is fighting for.
The situation is dire for the city of Detroit, and the city is under the very real threat of an emergency manager.
Mayor Bing will be armed with several milestones that have to be met when he meets with city council on Tuesday.
His agenda included the approval of the controversial contract for the mayor's attorneys at Miller-Canfield.
He says he thinks it can be done. He says he thinks he has the votes, but does he have the time?
The review process already underway for an emergency manager.
"I don't agree with it but that's not my decision." says Bing, referring to the placement of an emergency manager. "The reality is that if we don't get some of these milestones implemented Rick Snyder will have no choice."
Bing says he will not consider bankruptcy.
So his administration will continue to try to meet the milestone, uphold the consent agreement but Bing says everybody has to get on the same page
Bing: "I've got to make sure this house that is on fire doesn't implode. Rather than sit here and point fingers and blame anybody, the bottom line is we can't continue down this path."
