PAULSBORO, N.J. -
Hundreds of Paulsboro residents are back home after spending the last week in hotels following last Friday's Conrail freight train derailment and chemical spill.
It happened just a few hundred yards from Tim Killmer's house.
"It feels good to be back home," he told FOX29 Friday night.
He and the majority of other evacuees got home ahead of this weekend's deadline, as clean-up crews cleared the majority of vinyl chloride from the derailed cars in and around the Mantua Creek.
"It's been rough, I mean we've been working the best we can," Killmer said.
"Everything is good so far so far. Time will tell. We'll wait and see," said Alvera Robinson who lives across town.
She got back into her house just after an air quality team checked the atmosphere for excessive vinyl chloride levels. The results put her home in the clear.
"There's no place like home," she said.
However, the ten homes that sit closest to the accident site remain empty. Officials are keeping those residents away due to safety and noise concerns associated with the ongoing clean-up.
