Beach Tag Battle Surfaces In Sandy's Wake

It's been an issue for years, but now Hurricane Sandy is adding to the beach tag controversy.

The U.S. Senate proposed forcing towns that accept federal aid, to eliminate their beach tags.

Shore officials say getting rid of the tags could be more economically damaging than the storm itself.

"This plan would take away a user fee that is an inherent right of local municipalities to assess and to be accountable to their taxpayers," Cape May Mayor Edward Mahaney said.

If the law passes, towns down the shore may have to raise property taxes to pay for lifeguards, beach replenishment and maintenance.
