Holy Tweet: Pope Benedict Sends First Message

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

Pope Benedict XVI joined hundreds of millions of people on Twitter. He already has over 679 thousand followers.

But who is @Pontifex following?

"Right at this point, he's only following seven accounts," said digital media strategist Carlos Roig. "They are all official Vatican accounts. In fact, they are seven iterations of his own account. They are translated accounts in a variety of languages from Spanish to Portuguese, Arabic and Italian. So, at this point, he's not following anyone. They have indicated in their conversations that they don't intend too. Now, that very well may change."

The pope sent out his first tweet around 5:40 a.m. Wednesday.

It read, "Dear friends, I am pleased to get in touch with you through Twitter. Thank you for your generous response. I bless all of you from my heart."
