CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

One woman is dead after a salon shooting in Gary, Indiana.

Police say a gunman walked into Vision of Beauty on 5th Avenue and fired three shots, killing the owner of the salon, 34-year-old Antoinetta Johnson.

Police confirm The Post Tribune report that Johnson was a prosecution witness, cooperated with police and testified in a murder-for-hire case of a man killed last month. Two of the defendants were charged with murder.  In exchange for her testimony, Johnson was never charged.

Johnson's family was in shock Thursday night.

"She was a good girl," her aunt says. "She was a working girl."

Johnson was one of two people inside the business when the shots were fired. Police say her customer was shaken by the attack and provided detectives with few details about the shooter.

The salon is located across the street from the Gary Police Department.

"It's bold, no doubt about it," says Lt. Del Stout of the Gary Police Department. "No doubt about it, it's a very bold act."

Lt. Del Stout says Johnson may have known her attacker.

"I believe she was the intended target so possibly she did know her attacker," says Del Stout. "The suspect had a hood on his head when he came in with a sweatshirt."

Police also believe the circumstances of the shooting provide even more proof that she was targeted.

"The subject didn't try to harm the other person in the shop, didn't say anything to anyone, he just walked in and shot the victim," Del Stout explained.

"She's leaving behind three kids and she did not deserve this, didn't deserve it at all," says Johnson's cousin.

Police are now hoping that surveillance cameras from nearby merchants could provide a case-breaking tip once they download the video.
