Gloucester woman arraigned for fatal car crash

Posted: Updated:

GLOUCESTER (FOX25 / MyFoxBoston.com) — A Gloucester woman was arraigned on several charges Monday in connection with a fatal motor vehicle crash that occurred in Gloucester on Saturday night.

Rebecca Jacques, 52, of 187 Western Avenue, was arraigned on several charges, including negligent operation of a motor vehicle, operating after suspension, and a marked lane violation, for the crash that killed 52-year-old Mary Lipman, of Ipswich.

The judge ordered that Jacques be held on $25,000 cash bail, and the judge also ordered her not to operate a car for the duration of the case. If Jacques does post bail, she will be placed under house arrest.

According to police, Jacques was driving on Essex Street around 8:30 p.m. on Saturday when she slammed into a car being driven by off-duty Massachusetts State Police Lt. James Cowhig. Lipman, the passenger in Cowhig's car, was taken to a local hospital where she was declared dead.

Cowhig consented to have investigators seize his blood and urine samples which doctors stated tested negative.

State and local police are continuing to investigate, and prosecutors say more charges are possible.

Jacques must appear in court again on January 7.
