BOSTON (AP) - Gov. Deval Patrick says he's begun speaking to potential candidates about temporarily filling Sen. John Kerry's seat if President Obama taps Kerry to serve as secretary of state.
Patrick wouldn't say who he's talked to. He said those conversations were made in confidence.
Among the names mentioned as possible interim senators are former Gov. Michael Dukakis and Victoria Kennedy, widow of Sen. Edward Kennedy.
Patrick declined to say whether he's spoken with Kennedy. A spokeswoman for Kennedy said she has no comment.
Dukakis said Monday that he's not interested in the interim post.
Patrick said he's also had conversations with possible candidates thinking of running in what would be a special election to fill Kerry's seat.
Patrick declined to say who he's spoken with, but said he asks potential candidates why they want to run.
