SOUTHBRIDGE, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) -- A letter was sent home to parents of Southbridge Middle/High School students after a student reportedly brought a weapon to school on Tuesday.

"We are sending this letter home with your student today to inform you that a student at Southbridge Middle High School was removed from the premises yesterday after it was discovered that he was in possession of a weapon," read the statement. "It is alleged that this student made threats against the school."

The letter went on to say that there would be an increased police presence at the school for the remainder of the week.

School officials did not say what type of weapon the student had brought to the school or what sort of threat was made.

The name of the student was not released.

"Your children should be encouraged to attend school for the remainder of the week and feel safe that they will be able to participate in their education without fear of threat of violence," the letter said.

The following letter will be sent home with every student today upon dismissal:

Dear Parent(s)/Guardian(s):

We are sending this letter home with your student today to inform you that a student at Southbridge Middle High School was removed from the premises yesterday after it was discovered that he was in possession of a weapon. It is alleged that this student made threats against the school.

The Southbridge Police Department is involved and the incident is under both school and police investigation. In light of recent events, we are taking this incident very seriously, and there will be an increased police and administrative presence at the middle high school for the remainder of this week. In addition of this, there are a number of security enhancements, both physical and procedural, that will be occurring at all of our schools over the next days and weeks as quickly as is humanly possible.

I want to stress that the Southbridge Public Schools takes every threat to your child's safety very seriously, but we need your help. It is extremely important that if you have any information about a safety threat against any school in the district, please contact the police, then the school and the superintendent's office immediately.

We are also aware that there is continued fallout regarding this incident on Facebook and Twitter; however, you can be assured that the police and district administration are taking appropriate steps to protect your children and there is currently no eminent danger at the middle high school. Your children should be encouraged to attend school for the remainder of the week and feel safe that they will be able to participate in their education without fear of threat of violence.

Sincerely,

Terry L. Wiggin, Acting Superintendent

Southbridge Public Schools
