LYNN (FOX 25 /MyFoxBoston.com) – A male suspect was arrested on Cliff Street in Lynn Wednesday afternoon after leading police on a pursuit in which he caused a car crash and then carjacked another vehicle.
Massachusetts State Police spokesperson David Procopio told FOX 25 that the incident began on Commercial Street after police attempted to stop a Hyundai Santa Fe sport utility vehicle for a suspected narcotics violation around 3:30 p.m.
The suspect attempted to rundown the trooper, who had exited his cruiser, knocking him to the ground. The suspect, 26-year-old Luis Rosario, of Dorchester, then fled the scene.
A pursuit ensued involving state troopers and officers from the Lynn Police Department.
During the pursuit, the suspect rammed two state police cruisers with his vehicle.
The chase continued until the suspect's vehicle reportedly collided with two other vehicles at the intersection of Boston Street and Franklin Street.
The suspect's vehicle was damaged during the crash so he fled on foot and carjacked the vehicle of a witness who had abandoned his car in order to check on another driver involved in the crash.
Following the crash, a state trooper discharged his service weapon striking the Rosario in the arm.
Rosario fled the scene and drove to Atkins Street where he exited the stolen minivan and fled on foot. He was apprehended by officers on Cliff Street and transported to Salem Hospital where he remains under police guard.
David Woodworth, the man whose car was carjacked, described in detail the chaotic scene that unfolded as police attempted to capture the suspect.
"He [suspect] hit her doing about 50 mph. He went right through the red light and hit her. So I got out to make sure she was okay, and while I was out checking to make sure she was okay, they [police] were chasing him all around. I didn't know he was going to go and jump in my van and take off," Woodworth said.
According to the carjacking victim, he was on his way home from Walmart where he had just finished up some Christmas shopping when the incident occurred.
The female occupant of one of the vehicles involved in the crash was also transported to Salem Hospital for evaluation.
The investigation is ongoing.
