WGBH agrees to pay $300k settlement in grant case

Posted: Updated:

BOSTON (AP) - The U.S. Attorney's Office has announced that Boston-based public broadcasting corporation WBGH has agreed to pay a little over $300,000 in a civil settlement to resolve allegations it failed to properly track and account for federal grant money.

U.S. Attorney Carmen Ortiz said that from 2005 to 2008, WGBH maintained an inadequate accounting system for tracking grant expenditures. As a result, WGBH could not adequately ensure that project costs charged to federal grants were reasonable, allowable and allocable to the grants. The settlement announced Thursday will recover for damages incurred by the affected federal programs and also provide oversight to prevent future deficiencies.

The grant money came from the National Science Foundation, the National Endowment for the Humanities and the National Endowment for the Arts.

A spokesperson for WGBH, and its attorney, could not immediately be reached Thursday.
