Santa may deliver snow to parts of Mass.

Posted: Updated:

(FOX 25 / MyFoxBoston.com) - As Santa delivers gifts across the state overnight, the chances of snow increase. Light snow will develop from west to east after midnight and will continue through Christmas morning before taping off to showers in the afternoon. This is all due to a weak area of low pressure passing to our south, the first of a few storms in the forecast this week.

North and west of Boston snow will decorate the landscape Christmas morning. A coating to a couple of inches is expected. Closer to the coast rain will mix in, limiting any accumulation. A Winter Weather Advisory is posted until 10 a.m. Tuesday for Plymouth and Bristol counties.

After an inch or so of snow, precipitation may transition to freezing rain for a time tomorrow morning. This will result in a layer of ice over snow and may cause slippery travel.

This system will quickly move out of here as snow tapers to showers with even a few breaks of sun developing in western parts of the state by the afternoon.

Weak high pressure will dominate Tuesday night into Wednesday with dry and chilly conditions expected. However, clouds will increase late Wednesday as the next, much stronger, storm approaches the area. As it looks now, this one will be on the milder side for southern New England. However, as colder air will be in place to start, we will likely see a heavy burst of snow to start late Wednesday before a transition to rain.

Winds will be stronger with this system and that will help draw the milder air inland allowing for southeastern New England to see mainly rain. But, some parts of northern and western New England will stay all snow with plowable snow in the forecast.

Near the rain/snow line there may be a period of icy conditions, and travel on Thursday will likely be slow and slippery in spots. The exact track still needs to be narrowed down, but one to watch if you have travel plans after the holiday. Merry Christmas!
