Plum Island homes badly damaged following stormy weather, high tides

NEWBURY (FOX 25 / MyFoxBoston.com) – Residents of Plum Island are asking for state officials to help protect their homes from high tides after recent stormy weather.

Residences on Annapolis Way are directly exposed to the Atlantic Ocean and have taken a serious beating. The harsh weather conditions have led to extreme damage and evacuations.

Authorities have deemed four homes unsafe due to significant beach erosion and structural damage. One of the homes is in such grave danger that the residents are not even allowed to go back in to retrieve their personal belongings.

Steven and Sharon Bresnahan's Plum Island home located at 31 Annapolis Way is teetering on the edge of disaster. The home has been in Sharon's family for more than 40 years; however, the powerful winds and swells are taking their toll on the home and her family.

"A lot of blood, sweat, and tears went into that house. And, you know, we do a lot of the repairs ourselves. It's been very emotional," Sharon Bresnahan said.

The couple urged officials at the emergency meeting  to put some type of permanent structure on the beach to protect the homes from future damage.

Officials called an emergency meeting Thursday to address residents' concerns.

"What we're looking at is a temporary type of bag," said engineer David Vine. "Biodegradable 40ft long 3ftx3ft."

The cost of any measure will fall on homeowners.

"We have several houses that are in imminent danger of being undermined by the ocean. They have been condemned. Residents have been evacuated out of those houses," Newbury Police Chief Michael Reilly said.
