Woman involved in Newtown scam accused in Sandy hoax

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

A Bronx woman, who posed as the aunt of 6-year-old Newtown, Connecticut shooting victim and tried to make money off the incident, may have used the same scam during Hurricane Sandy.

Nouel Alba, 36, posted messages online claiming she had created several charities to help Sandy victims, according to the New York Post.

The Post says the posted messages were filled with false claims and an invalid tax ID number.

Alba was arrested by federal authorities on Thursday for lying that she was related to Noah Pozner, one of the victims in the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting.

She allegedly sent out her first calls for cash within hours of the shooting.

Alba used her Facebook account, telephone calls and text messages to seek donations for what she called a "funeral fund," prosecutors said.

She denied seeking the donations when she was contacted by FBI agents investigating charity scams related to the shooting. Alba appeared in federal court in Hartford and was released on $50,000 bond.
