ROMULUS, Mich. (WJBK) -
A 42 year-old man with a spotty criminal record was killed early Sunday morning, after leading police on a high-speed chase through Romulus.
Adam Orlando Carlisle was pulled over when an officer suspected he was driving drunk on Inkster Road.
He initially complied, but as the officer walked up to his vehicle, he fled the scene at a high-rate of speed.
The officer pursued him southbound along Inkster Road. Police say Carlisle was driving recklessly, creating a very dangerous situation for other motorists and pedestrians, putting lives at risk.
And that's how it ended.
Within seconds of running a red light at Inkster and Northline Roads, Carlisle rear-ended the vehicle in front of him, causing him to lose control and veer into oncoming traffic.
He struck another Romulus Police patrol unit head-on. The two police officers inside suffered moderate to severe, but non-life threatening injuries.
Jones suffered fatal injuries. He was pronounced dead on the scene.
The female driver of the vehicle Jones initially hit also suffered non-life threatening injuries. Her 3 year-old child was in the car, but wasn't hurt.
Because there was a police vehicle involved, Romulus Police requested the Michigan State Police to conduct the investigation.
A search of MDOC's online Offender Tracking System reveals Carlisle has a long history of previous drunk driving violations, along with weapons and drug violations.
He was released from prison last May, after serving seven years for felony drug offenses.
"Based on the suspect's current and past history of driving while intoxicated and his total disregard for anyone else's safety, including his own, we are fortunate today that no other lives were lost," said Romulus Police Chief Robert Dickerson.
