DETROIT (WJBK) -- It's New Year's Eve in the D.  In the heart of the city, workers spent the afternoon putting the finishing touches on "The Drop".  At midnight, a "D" will fall from 100 feet up in the air.

"It's been an absolute tremendous success.  I mean the growth pattern of this has been huge," said Motor City NYE co-founder Jerrid Mooney.

Meanwhile, at area liquor and grocery stores, employees were preparing for the big rush, cashing in on the end of the year celebrations.

Does Prince Fine Wines and Liquor have to buy a lot of extra stuff?

"Pretty much like, you know, champagne stuff and some liquor.  We just purchase extra stuff trying to be ready.  Hopefully we get some good business," said Eddie Hanna.

Before metro Detroiters glide into the New Year, they have a few more hours to celebrate 2012.  As the clock ticks down, some people have big plans, others small, but it's who they share their plans with that matter the most.

"I'm going to the concert tonight.  We're going to see Mike Epps and KEM at the Fox Theatre," said Chuck Cargile.  "I'm also going out to dinner."

"Just going to head over to some friends'," said Tracy Bloomfield.  "A big group of us [have gotten] together pretty much every year for about twelve years."

"Low key, you know, quiet, fireplace, watching TV, stuff like that," said Patrick Gabriel.  "It will be cool."

A mother is pained beyond words.  Her three-year-old daughter was killed in a crash Sunday on Detroit's west side less than a block from her house.  The chaotic scene was visible from her front door.
