NYC Christmas tree recycling program begins

Posted: Updated:

NEW YORK (AP) -- Another sign that the holidays are really over: It's time to recycle the Christmas tree.

New York City's program of curbside collection and recycling for the trees starts Wednesday. It runs through Jan. 12.

The Department of Sanitation says all ornaments and other items must be removed from the trees before they're put on curbs to be taken away. Residents are told to NOT put them in plastic bags.

The trees are collected, chipped and turned into compost. The compost is spread on parks and fields around the city. From January 9th, residents can go to a chipping site to get mulch for their own gardens.

The department says it collects over 140,000 trees every year.
