Pa. Turnpike Toll Increase Begins Sunday

Drivers who commute along the Pennsylvania Turnpike will see higher toll rates take effect Sunday.

The new toll rates will increase by 10 percent for cash customers and two percent for E-ZPass customers.

The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission says with the increase, E-ZPass customers who now see about a 17 percent savings on tolls will save about 25 percent, on average, compared to cash.

The turnpike commission says the increase is needed, in part, to pay for its obligation to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania to help address a transportation funding shortfall. The toll increase is also going into place to help the Turnpike's own capital plan.

Turnpike officials say the commission has set E-ZPass rates lower than cash rates since 2011 with an aim to increase E-ZPass enrollment.

According to the commission, about 68 percent of all turnpike travelers already use an E-ZPass.
