Boy dies in fire at Lakewood home

Posted: Updated:

A 6-year-old boy died in an early-morning house fire in Lakewood, police said. The child's 8-year-old brother is in critical condition.

No names have been released.

Officials are trying to determine what caused the fire that broke out around 2 a.m. Friday in the home on Sterling Avenue, but say it appears to have been accidental and may have started near a stove.

Police Capt. Paul Daly said firefighters took longer than usual to arrive at the home because a dispatcher misunderstood the address given by the frantic mother of the boys on her cellphone.

A 2-year-old boy also survived the fire.

Five first-responders were treated for smoke inhalation.
