Could gang squad an other special units be dissolved in order to get more boots on the street. Fox 2 obtained an email sources tell us is a DPD in-house email which reads, "Effective Mon. Feb 4 officers from these units will be reassigned: gang enforcement, tac mobile and narcotics."

"It's possible," says Mark Diaz with the Detroit Police Officers Assoc. "We spoke with the city and the city has the right to deploy manpower as they deem it necessary to benefit the citizens of Detroit."

But gang squad officers are on the front lines, facing dangerous organized youth and armed gangs who've been found with narcotics, loaded guns, and in some cases actually firing shots at police. Police administration and Mayor Bing said they would work diligently to find solutions to 2012's soaring murder rate. We asked Detroit police for comment, they did not respond. We're also told Detroit City Council members could lose their executive protection units.
