Lehigh Valley Hospital Fights Flu With Tent Treatment

Posted: Updated:
Lehigh County -

Influenza is pounding Pennsylvania with a vengeance quite early in the flu season with medical centers inundated with patients in their emergency rooms.

Lehigh Valley Hospital outside of Allentown is one of those places with people flooding the ER.  Roughly 700 people are fighting the illness in the region.

They are so busy they set up an extended treatment center in the form of a "Mobile Surge Tent" outside the ER to triage the cases that come in.

"We're seeing hundreds of patients," said Terry Burger, director of Infection Control and Prevention at the hospital.

"This is primarily for people that have mild illness," she said speaking of the tent.

It has six beds and will contain the same type of staff in the ER.  The move was designed to help manage patient overflow.

Staff will begin operating the tent at 11am Tuesday.  Hospital officials say they have two other tents to deploy if needed.

There are more than 3,000 people battling the flu right now in Pennsylvania.
