Warren Police find baby unharmed, recover SUV after theft

WARREN, Mich. (WJBK) -- Jesse Greer said he left three-month-old Aubrey all alone in his running vehicle. Aubrey is his firstborn. He thought he was doing the right thing.
"She just got over being sick. I didn't want to drag her out in the cold, so I left the truck running with the heat on and ran inside, said 'five on five,' turned around and a younger, black male jumped in my truck and took off."
Warren Police recovered the truck within minutes before his call to 9-1-1 was even over. The thief ditched the SUV and left the baby in the back seat. Police say she never even woke up, but leaving a child alone in a vehicle is against the law -- a misdemeanor.
The charge could be filed against Greer as early as Wednesday.
"The intent, I'm sure, of the legislation and our intent is not so much punitive as far as is this a bad guy. This is a guy that made a mistake, but the law's there to protect the innocent child, I'm sure, so that's the direction we'll take with it," said Warren Police Commissioner Jere Green.
"I had no idea it was the law. It's a mistake I'll never make again. Lesson learned, big time learned," Greer said.
"He's a great dad, so I feel horrible that they're going to try and maybe press charges against him. He doesn't neglect her. He takes care of her while I'm at work every day, so for them to say that he's neglectful, he's not. She's happy, healthy. I'm just happy to have her home," said mother Crystal Valentine.
"[All] I can do is thank Warren Police for responding so quickly and bringing my daughter home," said Greer.
