ROYAL OAK, Mich. (WJBK) -- How is the flu virus actually spread? I went to Beaumont Hospital where I asked nurse and prevention expert Julie Jordan.
Q: How is the flu spread?
A: The flu is spread via droplets -- respiratory droplets, nasal droplets. When [you] cough and sneeze, if [you] cough directly into somebody else's mucus membranes, you can transmit it. You can cough into your hand, not wash your hand, shake... hands with somebody else [or] touch a doorknob and if the next person comes... touches that doorknob, takes their hand to their eyes, nose or mouth, that's how you can acquire the virus.
Q: Is hand sanitizer a good preventitve option if you can't wash your hands?
A: It's a great option if you can't wash your hands. Ideally soap and water is best.
Jordan also says if you're sick, you shouldn't be visiting patients in the hospital.
"We want our patients to have visitors, but this is not the time to be casually visiting your neighbor down the street or your best friend because you heard they're sick. If you are sick yourself, don't come to visit in the hospital. Now if you've got a family member that it's essential that you come visit, we do have [a] stand... as a reminder to wash your hands, grab a mask if you're coughing and sneezing with Kleenex to really protect yourself because... we have flu patients here in the hospital."
Beaumont has setup a flu hotline with nurses answering your questions around the clock. The number to call is 888-375-4161.

Making healthy choices at the grocery store can be difficult. With deceiving labels, and buzz words like 'organic,' 'all-natural' and 'heart-healthy,' it's tough to decide what to buy.
