Burglars hit storm-ravaged homes on Long Island

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Hurricane Sandy demolished homes on Bayview Avenue East in Lindenhurst on Long Island's south shore. Entire floors remain missing and wood decks floated in from the ocean.

Stephen and Roseann Frisch will have to bulldoze their home, which was flooded by 5 feet of water, and completely rebuild it.

Insurance companies have not paid the Frisches, yet that is not what's most upsetting to them. On Tuesday night, burglars broke into their empty house and used the packing boxes the Frishes bought to loot portable valuables such as jewelry, clothes, expensive purses, a safe with bank information, and a shotgun.

Because of the Superstorm Sandy damage, most of the houses on their street are empty and do not have electricity, gas, or water. No one is around to call police.

Suffolk County police say since January 1, 2013, three homes were burglarized on Bayview Avenue East. But neighbors say actually four homes were burglarized since then and another house was hit two weeks ago.

Marie Puglisi said burglars hit her house twice, including Wednesday night, but she did not call police again because they took so long to respond during Sandy.

Neighbor Bob Brittan said burglars broke into his home, but most of his valuables were washed away

Stephen Frisch said his insurance company is offering $2,600 for personal items stolen. Roseann Frisch said she misses most an inexpensive pearl ring her deceased father gave her when she was 7.
