DETROIT (WJBK) -- The body of eight-year-old Tameria Greene was supposed to be laid to rest Thursday morning, but that didn't happen because we're told the family has yet to pay the bill.
"When I heard about this, it really hit hard because it's such a young girl. Her birthday was going to be the next day," said Imam Abdullah Eh-Amin from the Muslim Center of Detroit. "I felt just like everyone else, a lot of sorrow."
That's why Eh-Amin said he was more than willing to help the family of Tameria Greene.
Police say the child was murdered by her mother. Rahman Funeral Home handled the body and the Muslim Center of Detroit handled the funeral service. The imam said the funeral home donated a $2,000 casket. The state will pitch in about $700 and $200 was collected at the service, so the family was left with a $1,500 bill.
"Right after the service, they were supposed to bring the money. They kept saying they were going to bring the money, but it never materialized," Eh-Amin said.
"There had been so many different stories coming out of this family that we actually don't know what is going on. We don't know who is in charge. We don't know who is doing what. All we know is we haven't been paid."
Family members did not return our calls for comment, but one thing is clear, this little girl who suffered so much in life deserves far better even in death.
The imam told me that Tameria's body will be buried regardless of whether the family ever pays that bill because she deserves at least that much respect.
