WAREHAM, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) – Police in Wareham say a drunken man sped away from an officer, struck a telephone pole and rolled it onto its side.

The incident happened at about 11:45 p.m. Thursday near the Mill Pond Package Store.

Police said a man sitting a vehicle in the parking lot of the business saw an officer approaching and sped away.

Later police found the same vehicle turned on its side at about 53 Main Street. When the same officer approached the overturned vehicle, the man took off on foot.

After a short chase, police were able to catch the man. He was identified as 31-year-old Christopher Holmes, of Fall River. Holmes told police he had been drinking and had stolen the vehicle from a family member.

Police said the vehicle had not been reported stolen.

Holmes was charged with operating under the influence of alcohol, reckless operation of a motor vehicle, failure to stop for a police officer, use of a motor vehicle without authority and operating with a suspended driver's license.

He was arraigned Friday.
