Man accused of severely abusing his dogs won't give them up

CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A man who is in Cook County Jail facing felony animal cruelty charges is refusing to relinquish ownership of two badly malnourished and abused pit bulls that police believe he used in underground dogfights.

Jarcivius Taylor, 28, is being held on $100,000 bond and is facing felony aggravated animal cruelty charges, as well as a slew of other drug and gun charges, police said.

Taylor, who acknowledged he was the owner of the two pit bulls, is refusing to give up his two dogs, despite "gruesome" injuries they suffer, said police News Affairs Officer John Mirabelli.

State officials will file a petition to forcibly take custody of the dogs, Mirabelli said.

Officers with the Animal Crimes Team, acting on a tip that Taylor was abusing the animals, found the severely injured and gaunt-looking pit bulls Friday morning while serving a search warrant at Taylor's Pullman neighborhood home, police said.

There they discovered the male and a female pit bulls that both bore telltale injuries -- deformed front legs, open wounds, extensive scarring -- associated with dog fighting, police said.

The female dog was so severely underweight that her hip bones stuck out and she suffered from injuries indicating she had been over-mated, said Mirabelli. Her paws were also urine-stained because she was forced to wallow in her own filth, Mirabelli said.

The injuries to the female dog were so severe that police say she may have to be euthanized.

Police also seized a "street-level" amount of cocaine and marijuana, $1,500 cash, a Mossberg 12-gauge shotgun and a Yugoslavian assault rifle from the home at 12800 S. Green St., police said.

Taylor, who was out of jail on bond from previous charges when police searched the home, did not have a valid FOPID card and faces several felony firearm charges. He is also charged with felony possession of drugs and violating the conditions of his release from jail on bond.
