Sen. Kerry's confirmation hearing for Sec. of State to be held on Jan. 24

Posted: Updated:

BOSTON (FOX 25 / MyFoxBoston.com) U.S. Sen. John Kerry's confirmation hearing for the Secretary of State post will be held on Jan. 24.

FOX News has confirmed that the hearing will be held a week from Thursday.

Political experts expect the senator to receive speedy confirmation by his peers in the Senate.

FOX 25's Sharman Sacchetti says if Sen. Kerry is confirmed, a special election will be held between 145 and 160 days after his confirmation.

As of Wednesday, Rep. Ed Markey is the only one who has officially said he plans to run in the election. Sen. Kerry has already thrown his support behind Rep. Markey to take his place.

Rep. Michael Capuano announced this week that he will not run for Kerry's seat.

Congressman Stephen Lynch released the brief statement after fellow Rep. Capuano's announcement. Rep. Lynch said he knows Capuano made the right decision for himself and his family, but said he's still trying to decide "how I might best serve the families of Massachusetts."

Former U.S. Sen. Scott Brown is weighing a run on the Republican side.
