Police search for fourth suspect in Lawrence robbery, standoff

Posted: Updated:

LAWRENCE (FOX 25 / MyFoxBoston.com) Lawrence Police are looking for a fourth suspect in the Friday night robbery of a convenience store that led to a standoff with three other suspects.

Three armed men wearing masks are accused of robbing the South Union Market on S. Union Street at about 10 p.m. Friday. The store's owner and his wife reportedly hit the alarm and ran out of the store during the incident.

Police arrived to the scene and believed they were dealing with a hostage situation since one female employee was still inside the building. They also heard gunshots. The suspects surrendered just before 11 p.m. after several law enforcement agencies responded to the scene.

The Lawrence Police Chief John Romero says the men turned off the lights and then came out of the building with their hands on their heads.

Romero tells FOX 25 the female employee was found uninjured inside the store's freezer. While the employee was uninjured, the chief did say the men "manhandled and grabbed" her. The chief also says the gunshots police heard were likely from the suspects' attempt at shooting their way through a back door, which was padlocked.

Investigators are still looking for a fourth suspect believed to be driving a getaway car.

Police say two of the men involved are suspected of also being involved in a robbery earlier this month.  They also say they are investigating their possible role in as many as six other robberies in Lawrence.
