SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (WJBK) -- This may prompt you to tweet a little more often.  Researchers from the University of South Carolina have found Twitter can be a valuable support system for helping people lose weight.

Dieters are using Twitter as a tool to share their healthy eating choices and get encouragement from others with motivational tweets.

The study followed 96 overweight men and women for six months.  Using smart phones, they received podcasts with information about nutrition, exercise and goal setting, an app that monitored diet and physical activity and the Twitter app itself.

Researchers found that the more status updates people read related to healthy eating and exercise, the more weight they lost.

Sharing ideas and having a good support system is critical to any successful weight loss plan.
