NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

A fire that tore through a three-story building with apartments and shops in Brooklyn sent two firefighters to the hospital Tuesday afternoon, the FDNY said.

The fire broke out at just before 2 p.m. on Bedford Avenue in Williamsburg.

Two firefighters were hurt when part of the ceiling collapsed on them. They were taken to Weill Cornell Medical Center, officials said.

At least eight other firefighters suffered minor injuries, the FDNY said.

Three civilians were also hurt; one refused medical attention and two were taken to a hospital.

More than 160 firefighters responded to the scene, the department said.

American Red Cross responders also went to the scene to provide residents with emergency housing, blankets, emotional support, and health services, the group said.

It once was an accepted tactic as old as policing itself and, according to the NYPD, a key to the city's dramatic drop in crime: patrol officers stopping young men on the street to see if they're up to no good.
