1 dead in wrong-way crash

RAMAPO, N.Y. (AP) - New York State police say one person was killed when a man driving the wrong way collided with another car.

The accident occurred around 8:20 p.m. Tuesday on Interstate 87 just north of the Ramapo rest area.

Police say 81-year-old Alvin Lapides, of Monsey, was traveling north in the soutbound lanes when his Toyota Camry struck a Volvo driven by a 17-year-old boy.

Lapides' 76-year-old wife, Madeline, was pronounced dead at the scene. She was sitting in the front passenger seat of his car.

Alvin Lapides was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital in Suffern with possible internal injuries.

There were no other injuries.
