Two west suburban men face dozens of charges for stealing nearly $40,000 worth of copper pipes from vacant homes in a string of burglaries that go back to last August, according to police.
After police received tips that the two Aurora resident were responsible for multiple copper thefts, Armando Salazar, 50, of the 700 block of East Galena Boulevard.; and Ramon R. Mendoza, 39, of the 400 block of West New York Street, were arrested last Thursday, a release from Aurora police said.
They were taken into custody after police — who were conducting a detail based on the tips they received — saw them carrying copper tubing from a home in the 300 block of North Union Street, the release said.
Police said Salazar was responsible for similar crimes at a home in the same block where he lives, as well as thefts from nine other area homes. Detectives were also able to tie Mendoza to eight alleged burglaries, the release said.
Salazar was charged with 13 counts of felony criminal damage to property, 12 counts of burglary, and single counts of residential burglary and felony theft. Mendoza was charged with eight counts each of burglary and felony criminal damage to property, and one count of felony theft.
Police said the string of burglaries stretches back to August 8, 2012, and the total loss exceeds $39,000.
The men were being held at the Kane County Jail in St. Charles.
