PHILADELPHIA -

Just as the new shortened NHL season has begun, the Philadelphia Flyers on Wednesday were dealt some bad news as forward Scott Hartnell will be out indefinitely with an injury to his left foot.

The news was posted just after 6 p.m. on the team's official website.

"Scott will be out indefinitely with a left foot injury," a statement from Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren read. "We will know more on this within a day or two as we await results of tests."

The Flyers opened their season on Saturday to a loss against the Pittsburgh Penguins. Two other losses followed.

The team's next game is Thursday against the New York Rangers at the Wells Fargo Center.
