Squatter dies in fire at vacant house

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Police on Long Island say that a squatter died in an early morning fire in a vacant home.  It happened about 5 a.m. on Sycamore St. in Central Islip.

Suffolk County police say that someone driving by saw the fire and called 911.

Firefighters from the Central Islip Fire Department responded but couldn't get inside the home because of the intense fire and smoke.

When the fire was eventually put out, the man's body was found in the basement.  The man's identity is being withheld pending positive identification.

The body is at the Suffolk County Medical Examiner's office.

Police say that there was no electricity in the home at the time of the fire.

The investigation is continuing. Detectives are asking anyone with information to call the 631-852-6392.
