Jury deliberating in Weymouth man's murder trial

Posted: Updated:

DEDHAM, Mass. (AP) — The jury has started deliberating in the trial of a Weymouth man charged with fatally stabbing a guest staying at his apartment during an argument over money.

Norfolk Superior Court jurors began deliberating the case of 34-year-old Eric Carpenito on Wednesday and are expected to continue Thursday.

Carpenito is charged with second-degree murder in the death of 51-year-old David Lilley Jr. in May 2011.

Prosecutors say Carpenito demanded money from Lilley for allowing him to stay at his apartment, they argued, and Carpenito stabbed Lilley.

The Patriot Ledger (http://bit.ly/WPN7VR ) reports that Carpenito's lawyer said it was self-defense. He says when Carpenito demanded that Lilley leave, Lilley attacked him, and Carpenito grabbed a knife off a desk.

Carpenito tried to stop the bleeding, called 911 and cooperated with police.
