Fire crews respond to three four-alarm fires in one day

LAWRENCE (FOX 25 / MyFoxBoston.com) – A massive four-alarm fire broke out in Lawrence, and Friday morning, the building was covered in ice.

Thursday night, intense flames lit up the night sky as they poured out of the third floor of a home around 5 p.m. on South Broadway Street.

The bitter cold temperatures sent a mist into the air when the cold water hit the red-hot flames. Two people were said to be home at the time and they managed to get out safely.

One firefighter injured his knee and another had chest pains while battling the blaze. There is no word on their conditions.

The brother of the couple living in the third floor apartment told FOX 25's Catherine Parrotta the fire started in the ceiling right over their bed. The family lost a cat and everything they owned in the blaze. The man said his brother was out of work and recently had surgery.

In Barre, a four-alarm fire claimed the life of a woman. It happened around 10 a.m. Thursday in Trafalgar Square. Officials say the fast-moving fire and cold weather made for tough conditions.

The police chief told FOX 25 he just checked on the resident the day before and she was fine. The victim's name has not been released.

The State Fire Marshal's office said crews around the state were busy yesterday. It was a similar situation for firefighters across the region. In addition to Barre and Lawrence, fires were reported in Brookline, East Boston, Lowell, Marblehead, and Hyannis.
