BOSTON (AP) — Despite multiple reports that Rep. Stephen Lynch is planning a run for the U.S. Senate, a spokesman for the Boston democrat says he has yet to make a decision

Scott Ferson, a spokesman for Lynch, told Fox 25's Sharman Sacchetti that Lynch is "taking the necessary steps to run but has not made a final decision."

A number of media outlets, including the Associated Press, reported that a person with knowledge of the decision said Lynch would announce he would run for John Kerry's U.S. Senate seat if Kerry is confirmed as secretary of state. The person requested anonymity to avoid pre-empting the official announcement.

Ferson told Sacchetti that Lynch was doing research across the state but would not announce any run for Senate until Kerry had been confirmed.

Meanwhile, Congressman Edward Markey has already announced he will seek the seat.

Markey, a Malden Democrat, has won the backing of top Democratic officials including Attorney General Martha Coakley and state Treasurer Steve Grossman. Kerry has also signaled his support.

Former U.S. Sen. Scott Brown is considering running on the Republican side.

Kerry is expected to be confirmed as Secretary of State next week.
