Expert Looks At Te'o's Bizarre Body Language

Posted: Updated:

Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te'o broke his silence Thursday in the wake of the hoax that changed his life.

In an interview with Katie Couric, Te'o said he was heartbroken when he learned that the woman he knew as Lennay Kekua died of cancer in September.

Couric asked pointed questions about the relationship, like why they never met in person and what happened when they tried to video chat.

Just as important as Te'o's responses was his body language during the interview. Our body language expert, Tonya Reiman, appeared on Good Day Friday to explain.

"Overall it was bizarre," said Reiman. Te'o was a little "off" and his body language gave a lot of red flags.

There were several moments when Te'o showed a lot of emotion when he should have been more reserved, and he was often reserved when he could have been more emotive.

To the question of his sexuality, Te'o really stressed his denial when he could have been more relaxed. He also answered no while nodding his head up and down, which Reiman marked as a red flag.

But Reiman said Te'o may not have been trying to be deceptive. Since he is so young, he could have just been nervous.

The full body language explanation can be seen in the video posted above.
