App downloaded by students causes bug on Natick school computers
NATICK (FOX 25 / MyFoxBoston.com) An application designed to circumvent Internet filters on Natick school computers created a bug that took the district's tech department days to resolve.
MetroWest Daily News reports that students downloaded an application called "TOR" in order to bypass the Internet filters that block social media, gambling, and pornography websites. The application created a bug that brought thousands of student laptops down. Officials say the tech department restored all of the computers within a week.
In a letter to parents, Natick school officials ask students and families to abide by their policies. They say more than 100 students re-installed "TOR" after the laptops were fixed.
Students at the high school level, as well as eighth graders, have received district-issued lap tops. Administrators claim the program boosts engagement.
