Students robbed while waiting at bus stops in Detroit

DETROIT (WJBK) -- Wednesday afternoon, a group of students from a nearby high school were standing at the bus stop waiting.  Next thing they knew, they were being robbed, and we've learned this isn't the only bus stop where it's happened.

"They all just started going to everybody saying take out your stuff.  Like give us everything you've got," said a student at Detroit's Communications and Media Arts High School.

Before the robbery, the eleventh grader felt safe.  She was with three other students.  It was daylight, and they were at the bus stop near the school and across the street from a church.

The thugs, were young guys, other  teenagers, acting like they were about to hop on the bus.

"They got all our phones and other people they got like headphones and stuff valuable that they had," the student explained.

"I was very upset, and I just decided that my daughter's not riding the bus anymore," said Rubbie.

Her daughter was one of the four students robbed at the bus stop Wednesday afternoon.

"The kids are terrorized.  Going to or from school should be just as safe as being in school to me," Rubbie remarked.

This isn't an isolated incident.  Fox 2 has learned students across Detroit are being targeted at bus stops, including students at Southeastern High School who were robbed at gunpoint while waiting at the bus stop on Mack Avenue near Fairview.

Students have become standing targets.  To the thieves it doesn't seem to matter who is around or the time of day.

"They just run up on them and take their stuff," said student Deshawndre Jenkins. "Walk off like nothing happened."

"They're taking their phones, money, whatever they got."

"It's just getting really bad, so bad where the kids can't even go to school," said Rubbie.

The thieves are still out there.  The parents that we talked with would like to see more police patrols around these bus stops before and after school to try and keep the students safe.
