Boston mayor to give annual speech under spotlight

Posted: Updated:

BOSTON (AP) — Boston Mayor Thomas Menino is set to give his annual state of the city address, in the spotlight as he recovers from health problems last fall.

Gov. Deval Patrick and top office-holders are expected to attend Tuesday evening. It's not known if Menino will address his re-election plans.

There will be a political backdrop regardless. The speech comes hours after Sen. John Kerry is to be confirmed as Secretary of State, setting off a special election battle for his seat.

Menino spent eight weeks in the hospital with a respiratory infection and a blood clot, complicated by a compression fracture in his spine and a diabetes diagnosis. Aides says he continued running the city as he recovered. He's made fewer public appearances as he rehabs.

Boston's longest serving mayor was re-elected to a fifth four-year term in 2009.
